Screendoor is growing our platform as an “LP of GPs” with four new GP Advisors joining the Screendoor community: Mar Hershenson (Pear VC), Rob Hayes (First Round Capital), Wayee Chu (Reach Capital), and Zal Bilimoria (Refactor Capital). We can’t wait for future generations of new venture managers to have the opportunity to work with them.
Mar, Rob, Wayee and Zal are joining our platform of other firm builders from Homebrew, Fika, Forerunner, Fuel Capital, Kindred Ventures, Reach Capital, Ritual Capital, Cowboy Ventures, and Precursor Ventures. Screendoor’s goal isn’t just to help new VCs raise funds - we want to help our managers build lasting firms. Our GP Advisors are all early stage investors who have built recognized brands in the venture capital industry. They have each experienced the peaks and valleys of the day-to-day of managing a firm, raising capital, and investing funds, while balancing the long-term nature of venture capital.
And just like there’s no predefined mold for what strategy makes a successful venture firm, there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach for the questions and curveballs that a new manager faces daily. Even seemingly trivial decisions have the potential to shift the trajectory of their portfolio and their firm. It’s why being a fund manager is fundamentally different from being an investor. Building as a fund manager is about operating as a strong investor, but also looking ahead one...five…ten years down the road. Together, our Screendoor team works deeply with our portfolio to help them see around corners through tactical firm-building challenges, like navigating tricky deal terms, as well as strategic planning areas, like potential team expansions or even plotting their firm branding and name during pre-fund formation. We’re that early!
"Screendoor shares a lot of foundational DNA with the seed venture capital ecosystem of two decades ago: you have the potential to drive outsized financial returns by focusing exclusively on an early stage market that most investors don't yet fully understand, or even prematurely dismiss," says Rob Hayes of First Round Capital. “Becoming a GP Advisor gives me the chance to work with another type of entrepreneur - emerging managers - and help them build the next generation of successful venture firms in their own image.*"
We know how hard it is to build a firm - you’re truly running multiple businesses across founders, investors, and allocators, not to mention your own internal team, and all while learning, iterating, and forging forward. We’re building Screendoor to represent the type of LP each of our now experienced GP Advisors wishes they had access to during their firm’s earliest years. And we build this way because we believe that the continuous infusion of the best new investors into the ecosystem has the potential to generate outsized returns, benefit founders who are building category-defining companies, and better reflect the range of backgrounds and perspectives within our population. We’re so grateful to work with these phenomenal GP Advisors to support and shape the next generation of enduring firms. Welcome Mar, Rob, Wayee, and Zal!
If you’re an investor contemplating building your firm and would like to share more information with us, no need for a warm intro! We would love to hear from you through our open application. And if you’re an LP who would like to learn more as we expand our efforts, we welcome you to share your info so we can chat!
